Your body needs a particular number of calories a day to maintain your body weight. This is your “calorie maintenance level”. This is the number of calories your body must consume to do everything it needs to do during the day.

Your body takes in these calories with food and drink. If you eat about the same amount of calories per day your weight will remain about the same. A simple example would be if your “calorie maintenance level” was 2000 per day and you ate 2000 calories a day, your weight wouldn’t change. You maintain a certain weight by eating only the calories your body needs. If you reduce the number of calories you take in to less than your “calorie maintenance level,” you will begin to lose weight.

This is a great diet to achieve a gradual weight loss. Once the goal weight has been established you simply sustain your weight by maintaining your calorie intake.
